Claude Code pricing: what does Claude Code actually cost?
Claude Code pricing is a subscription or an API bill, not a separate fee: the Pro plan costs $20 a month ($17 billed annually), Max starts at $100 a month, and neither charges extra for the tool itself. Anthropic's own docs put API-metered Claude Code at about $13 per developer per active day.
What matters
- Claude Code is not sold on its own: Claude's pricing page includes it in the Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans and leaves it out of Free.
- Claude Pro costs $20 per month, or $17 per month billed annually with $200 up front, while Max starts at $100 per month with a 5x or 20x usage tier.
- Anthropic's October 7, 2026 launch added monthly Claude Platform credits for Max and Team: $100 for Max 5x, $200 for Max 20x, and up to $500 pooled for Team.
- Anthropic's Claude Code cost documentation says the tool charges by API token consumption, averaging about $13 per developer per active day and $150 to $250 per developer per month.
- Haiku 5.5, released October 7, 2026, lists input at $0.10 per million tokens under 100k against Sonnet 5.5's $2.00, so cheap subagent work inside Claude Code now costs far less.
What does Claude Code cost?
Claude Code is billed two ways, and most of the confusion comes from mixing them. Run it inside a Claude subscription and you pay a flat monthly plan while Anthropic meters your usage against plan limits. Run it against an API key and you pay per token, at the same rates as any other Claude Platform call.
There is no separate Claude Code licence fee. Claude's pricing page lists Claude Code as available on Pro, Max 5x, Max 20x, Team and Enterprise, and absent from the Free plan.
Claude Code pricing: plans and what they include (October 2026)
On Claude's own pricing page, Pro is the entry point for Claude Code at $20 per month, or $17 per month when billed annually with $200 up front. Max targets people who work with Claude all day: from $100 per month, with a choice of 5x or 20x the usage of Pro. Team and Enterprise are priced per seat.
Every tier above Free includes Claude Code, so the plans differ in usage limits rather than in access to the tool. That is the number that matters: a Max plan is not more capable, it just lets you run more Claude Code sessions before you hit a ceiling.
The October 2026 credit change that shifts the math
Anthropic's Claude Haiku 5.5 launch on October 7, 2026 also introduced a monthly Claude Platform credit for subscribers. Max 5x users receive $100 in credits per month, Max 20x users receive $200, and Team subscribers receive up to $500, pooled across their users. Those credits are spent on the Claude Platform, so they cover API calls made by agents and scripts you build, including tooling that drives Claude Code.
The Claude Code cost documentation describes the same mechanic from the user side: you can add usage credits to your subscription, and the /usage command shows your spend for the current month measured against a spend limit you set. Before you spend any credits, the row reads Unlimited with no figure.
What Claude Code costs per developer on the API
If you bill Claude Code to an API key instead of a subscription, Anthropic publishes a range rather than one number. Its cost documentation puts the average across enterprise deployments at around $13 per developer per active day and $150 to $250 per developer per month, with costs staying below $30 per active day for 90% of users.
That spread is why the same documentation recommends starting with a small pilot group. Per-developer spend moves with model choice, codebase size, and whether you run multiple instances or automation, so a headline token price tells you far less than your own first two weeks of usage.
Which Claude model keeps Claude Code cheap?
Model choice is the biggest lever on an API-billed Claude Code bill. Haiku 5.5, released October 7, 2026, lists input at $0.10 per million tokens and output at $0.50 per million for prompts up to 100,000 tokens, with cache reads at $0.01. Above 100,000 tokens the input price steps up to $0.50 and output to $2.50.
Anthropic is explicit that cheaper is not automatically better here. Its launch page states that Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5 remain the better choices for complex agentic coding tasks like those measured by Terminal-Bench 4.0, while Haiku 5.5 suits narrowly scoped work such as summaries, compaction, classification and subagent roles. The same page says Sonnet 5.5's cache reads were halved, making Sonnet roughly 20% cheaper on most agentic work.
Pro, Max or API: which should you pay for?
- Pay for Pro if you use Claude Code a few hours a day and want a fixed bill. At $20 per month it is cheaper than almost any measured API footprint at that volume.
- Pay for Max from $100 per month if you run Claude Code all day, in parallel sessions, or across a large codebase. The high usage ceiling and the $100 to $200 monthly platform credit are what you are buying.
- Bill the API if your usage is spiky or mostly automated. Token billing only charges for what runs, which suits bursty agents better than a flat plan.
- Watch the credits if you already pay for Max or Team. The new monthly credits arrived October 7, 2026, so anyone who was paying out of pocket for Claude Platform usage on top of a subscription should re-check the maths this month.

FAQ
How much does Claude Code cost?
Claude Code has no separate fee. It is included in the Pro plan at $20 per month, or $17 per month billed annually, and in Max from $100 per month. Anthropic's documentation estimates API-billed Claude Code at $150 to $250 per developer per month.
Is Claude Code free?
No. Claude's pricing page excludes Claude Code from the Free plan, and the cheapest plan that includes it is Pro at $20 per month.
Is Claude Code cheaper on a Max plan or on the API?
It depends on volume. Max starts at $100 per month and now bundles $100 of monthly Claude Platform credit for the 5x tier and $200 for 20x, so heavy daily users usually come out ahead on a subscription, while spiky or automation-heavy workloads often cost less billed by the token.
