Tailscale pricing: what does it actually cost per user?
Tailscale pricing is $0 for up to 6 users, $8 per user per month on Standard and $18 on Premium, verified on 29 October 2026. That per-user model puts a 25-person team at $2,400 a year, nearly $1,000 above ZeroTier's $1,416 for the same 60 devices.
What matters
- Personal is free forever with a hard 6-user cap, 3 ACL groups and 50 tagged resources; devices under each user are unlimited.
- Standard at $8/user/month is $96 per user per year. Premium at $18 adds flow logs, JIT access and 10,000 ephemeral minutes instead of 1,000.
- At 25 users and 60 devices: Tailscale $2,400/yr, NetBird EUR 1,800/yr, Twingate $1,500/yr, ZeroTier $1,416/yr.
- Extra tagged resources cost $1/month each past the 50 included; the Mullvad bundle is $5/month per 5 devices.
- Contractual support SLAs are add-ons (Silver, Gold, Platinum) or Enterprise, not part of the self-serve plans.
Tailscale pricing plans, verified 29 October 2026
Four plans, one billing unit: the user. Tailscale charges for seats and gives every seat unlimited devices, which is why a two-person homelab and a two-person studio pay the same bill.
- Personal: $0. Up to 6 users, 3 ACL groups, 50 tagged resources to start, 1,000 minutes per month of ephemeral resources. Devices are unlimited.
- Standard: $8 per user, per month. Unlimited users, SCIM provisioning, 10 ACL groups, MDM configuration, device posture integrations with MDM/EDR/XDR, advanced roles for billing and audit.
- Premium: $18 per user, per month. Everything in Standard plus 300 ACL groups, 10,000 ephemeral minutes, just-in-time access, advanced Tailscale SSH, network flow logs, log streaming and regional routing.
- Enterprise: custom. Custom device quantities, a solutions engineer, custom MSA, invoice billing and Tailscale's full product set (PAM, CI/CD, Edge & IoT, Kubernetes).
Add-ons sit on top: extra tagged resources at $1 per month each after the first 50, the Mullvad exit-node bundle at $5 per month for every 5 devices, and support packages with Silver, Gold or Platinum response SLAs.
The $8 tier is not the real price for teams with compliance needs
Standard looks like the obvious buy at $8, and for a 10-person startup with a couple of servers it is. Two things push real bills higher.
Logs and just-in-time access start at $18. Network flow logs, log streaming, advanced SSH and regional routing are Premium features. If a security review asks who connected to which host last Tuesday, the answer is not in Standard. That is $10 more per user per month, or $120 per user per year, and Tailscale's own plan copy points heavy ephemeral usage at Premium too: 1,000 minutes on Standard versus 10,000 on Premium.
Infrastructure counts separately from people. The 50 tagged resources included in every plan are how servers, exit nodes and CI runners get addresses. Kubernetes clusters, a CI fleet and a rack of servers blow through 50 quickly, and each additional resource is billed at $1 per month. Twenty extra resources is $240 a year on top of the seat bill, and it appears on no plan card.
Support is the third gap. Contractual response times are sold as Silver, Gold or Platinum add-ons, or bundled into Enterprise. Self-serve plans do not include an SLA.
What 25 people and 100 people cost per year
Seat pricing only becomes a decision when you multiply it. Two scenarios, both with the plan each vendor positions for that size, all prices as published on 29 October 2026:
25 users, 60 devices (laptops plus phones plus a few servers): Tailscale Standard at $200/month, $2,400/year. ZeroTier Essential at $118/month, $1,416/year, because $18 covers 10 devices and the other 50 cost $2 each. Twingate Teams at $125/month, $1,500/year. NetBird Team at EUR 150/month, EUR 1,800/year.
100 users, 300 devices: Tailscale Standard at $800/month, $9,600/year. ZeroTier Scale at $539/month, $6,468/year, with 100 devices included and the remaining 200 at $1.80 each. Twingate Business at $1,000/month, $12,000/year. NetBird Team at EUR 600/month, EUR 7,200/year.
The spread between cheapest and dearest at 100 users is $5,532 a year for what most buyers treat as the same product category. That is the cost of the billing model, not the cost of the features.
How Tailscale actually bills you each month
Seat billing is measured, not pre-sold in packs. Tailscale's own FAQ states that you choose the number of seats your tailnet has and are billed at the start of the month on the seats that exist, with no hard cap: add a contractor mid-quarter and the next invoice reflects it, remove one and the bill drops.
Tailscale's billing FAQ ties annual invoicing to Enterprise, arranged with sales, while plan changes happen self-serve from the Billing page in the admin console. The published $8 and $18 are monthly rates with no annual toggle on the pricing page, so budget them as monthly commitments unless you are negotiating an Enterprise contract.
Budget the add-ons in the same line item. Tagged resources past 50 at $1 each, Mullvad at $5 per five devices, and ephemeral minutes beyond 1,000 (Standard) or 10,000 (Premium), which Tailscale routes to sales rather than publishing an overage rate. A team running CI on ephemeral nodes should ask for that number before signing, because it is the one cost on the page without a price.
Per user or per device: the choice that moves the bill
Tailscale prices humans. ZeroTier prices machines. NetBird and Twingate price humans but include a machine allowance with each seat.
That single difference decides which vendor is cheaper for your company shape. A software team where every engineer runs a laptop, a phone and two VMs looks expensive under ZeroTier's $2-per-device math and cheap under Tailscale, where those four devices ride on one $8 seat. Flip it for a warehouse, a clinic or a retail chain: 30 shared terminals, five people who touch them. ZeroTier Essential charges $18 for the first 10 devices plus $2 for each of the other 20, or $58 a month. Tailscale charges for the five users who log in, which is $40 a month on Standard and no longer free once the sixth person appears.
Two caveats before you switch on price alone. ZeroTier's $18 Essential plan is a commercial licence with 10 networks and five admins; the free Personal tier is explicitly non-commercial, 10 devices, one network, so a business cannot stay on it. NetBird quotes in euros, so a dollar comparison needs your own conversion and card fees. Twingate bundles 5 devices per user and 50 resources on the free Starter plan, which caps it at small teams.
Tailscale vs ZeroTier, NetBird and Twingate on price
Feature parity is not the point of this table. The point is which billing unit each vendor chose, because that is what your invoice follows.
ZeroTier Essential at $18 covers 10 devices, then $2 each, plus 10 networks and five admins. Its $179 Scale tier includes 100 devices, drops extra devices to $1.80 and removes the network and admin caps. At 25 users the $18 tier is still the right pick while the fleet stays under 90 devices: past that, the per-device add-ons overtake Scale's $179 flat fee.
NetBird Team at EUR 6 per user includes 100 machines and 10 more per user, so 25 users carry 350 machines before overage. Extra machines are EUR 0.50 per month. That machine allowance is the reason NetBird lands between Tailscale and Twingate in the 25-user scenario: more expensive per seat than Twingate, cheaper than Tailscale, with room for infrastructure that Tailscale would bill as tagged resources.
Twingate Teams at $5 per user stops at 100 users and 5 devices per person, which is generous for knowledge workers and tight for anyone running test VMs on their laptop. Past 100 users the plan is Business at $10, and that is why the 100-user column jumps to $1,000 a month. Twingate's free Starter tier covers 5 users and 50 resources.
The pattern across all four: the cheapest vendor changes with the headcount. Under 6 users, Tailscale and Twingate are both $0 and the argument is about features. Between 10 and 40 users, the per-seat vendors undercut Tailscale. Above 100 devices with few owners, ZeroTier's flat tiers take over.
Who should pay Tailscale's per-user price
Pay for Tailscale when devices outnumber people and policy granularity matters. Per seat you get unlimited devices, ACL groups that scale to 300 on Premium and integrations with the identity provider you already run. A 12-person engineering team on 6 devices each still pays 12 seats, which is where Twingate's 5-devices-per-user allowance starts to pinch.
Look elsewhere in three cases. If you are managing shared hardware with few named users, ZeroTier's device billing wins on arithmetic, not marketing. If you want the lowest per-seat number and can live with 5 devices per person, Twingate Teams at $5 undercuts Tailscale Standard by $3 per user per month. If self-hosting the control plane is a hard requirement, NetBird sells that path directly, and its Team plan at EUR 6 per user includes 100 machines plus 10 per user.
One cost lever that has nothing to do with seats: exit nodes and subnet routers can run on a small VPS you already pay for. Moving egress onto a cheap VPS does not change your Tailscale bill, but it avoids paying a cloud provider's egress rates on top of it.

FAQ
Is Tailscale free for personal use?
Yes. The Personal plan is $0 indefinitely for up to 6 users, with 3 ACL groups, 50 tagged resources, 1,000 minutes of ephemeral resources per month and unlimited devices per user. The cap is users, not machines.
Does Tailscale charge per user or per device?
Per user. Every seat covers unlimited devices, and tagged resources such as servers and exit nodes are counted separately: 50 are included and additional ones cost $1 per month each.
Is Tailscale cheaper than ZeroTier?
It depends on the ratio of people to devices. At 25 users and 60 devices, ZeroTier Essential bills $1,416 a year against Tailscale Standard's $2,400, but ZeroTier charges per device, so a team where each person runs three devices can end up paying more there than per seat.
