ChatGPT Pro pricing: what do the $100, $200 and $500 tiers include?
ChatGPT Pro pricing now has three monthly tiers as of October 1, 2026: Pro 100 at $100, Pro 200 at $200, and the new Pro 500 at $500, the only Pro tier that includes Astra Ultrafast, per OpenAI's help centre and ChatGPT pricing page.
What matters
- ChatGPT Pro is sold in three monthly tiers: Pro 100 at $100, Pro 200 at $200 and Pro 500 at $500, all with the same core feature set (Pro models, Codex, deep research, image creation, memory, file uploads).
- Astra Ultrafast is included only on Pro 500. At launch, buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 does not unlock it, so speed cannot be bought tier by tier.
- Pro 200 is open to new subscribers again, but new subscriptions that are not grandfathered get a lower included usage allowance than the Pro 200 sold before the September 10, 2026 pause, for the same $200 per month.
- Grandfathered Pro 200 subscribers keep their previous allowance only through October 29, 2026. The price stays $200 when the lower allowance takes effect.
- Pro is billed monthly with no annual option, while ChatGPT Plus is $20 per month and Go is $8 per month, per the ChatGPT pricing page.
ChatGPT Pro pricing in one table (checked October 1, 2026)
ChatGPT Pro is OpenAI's top consumer subscription, built for people who run Codex, deep research and long agent sessions all day rather than occasionally. As of October 1, 2026 it comes in three monthly tiers, and OpenAI lists all three together in its Pro tiers help article: Pro 100 at $100, Pro 200 at $200 and Pro 500 at $500 per month.
The public ChatGPT pricing page shows only a single number for the plan, from $100 per month, plus a line promising your choice of three usage tiers. So the tier you actually land on depends on how much usage you buy, not on one headline price. Pro 200 includes more usage than Pro 100, and Pro 500 carries the highest included allowance of the three, per OpenAI's help centre.
All three tiers ship the same feature list: Pro models, Codex, deep research, image creation, memory and file uploads. What you are shopping for is the size of the usage allowance, plus one feature that is fenced off for the top tier alone.
What changed: Pro 500 arrives and Pro 200 reopens with less usage
Two changes landed in the last days of September 2026. OpenAI added Pro 500 at $500 per month and reopened Pro 200 to new subscribers after pausing those sign-ups and upgrades on September 10, 2026. The reopening comes with a sting: new Pro 200 subscriptions that are not grandfathered include a lower usage allowance than the Pro 200 that was sold before the pause, at the same $200 per month. OpenAI's stated reason is that its models have become more efficient per dollar, and the Hacker News thread that surfaced the change drew 218 points and a lot of argument about paying more for less.
Existing subscribers are not cut off immediately. If your Pro 200 subscription was active at the eligibility cutoff, or during the seven days before it, you keep your previous included usage allowance through October 29, 2026 while the subscription stays active. After that date the lower allowance applies and the price does not move. Only affected users get an email about the change, and a Pro 200 subscription that lapsed just before the cutoff still qualifies if you resubscribe in time.
That date is the part worth diarising. The October 29 change is a quiet price rise expressed as a usage cut, and it lands on people who have already built a workflow around the old allowance.
Astra Ultrafast is Pro 500 only, and credits will not unlock it
Ultrafast is the fastest response class OpenAI sells in ChatGPT and Codex, and among Pro plans it is available only on Pro 500. You pick it in the model picker, and it spends your plan's included usage first before drawing on any credit balance.
The catch is what happens on the cheaper tiers. At launch, buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 does not unlock Ultrafast, per OpenAI's help centre. A Pro 200 subscriber who needs the faster generation has exactly one route: move up to Pro 500. Topping up will not get you there.
Credits still matter below the top tier. OpenAI sells them as a pay-as-you-go add-on for Codex, ChatGPT Work and the Word, Excel and PowerPoint add-ins when you hit your plan limits. Included usage is always spent first, then the credit balance, and availability depends on your plan and account. Rates and eligible features appear in Settings rather than on a public rate card, so price the credit route against a month of your own traffic instead of against the marketing page.
One structural limit applies to all three tiers: Pro is billed monthly only. OpenAI states that annual billing and prepaying several months are not available on Pro, so there is no discount for committing to the $500 tier.
ChatGPT Pro vs Plus vs Go: what the extra money buys
The step from Plus to Pro is a capacity purchase, not a feature unlock. Plus is $20 per month and already includes advanced reasoning models, expanded Codex usage, expanded deep research and ChatGPT Work across desktop, web and mobile. Go is $8 per month with more messages, uploads and image creation than Free, and it may include ads. Pro, from $100 per month, adds the Pro reasoning tier powered by GPT-6 Astra, three usage tiers to choose between, longer Codex and Work sessions, the Dot always-on agent, maximum deep research, and the Ultrafast response class on eligible tiers.
For a solo user the decision is arithmetic. Pro 100 costs five times what Plus costs, and it buys the smallest Pro allowance, so if you only occasionally run into Plus limits, price the credits route before you move a tier. If long Codex sessions or agent runs stall your week, Pro 200 or Pro 500 is a legitimate capacity line item, and Pro 500 is the only one that also removes the generation-speed ceiling.
How ChatGPT Pro pricing compares with Claude Pro and Claude Max
Anthropic's subscription ladder overlaps with OpenAI's at the bottom and stops lower at the top. Claude Pro is $20 per month, or $17 per month when billed annually at $200 up front, and Claude Max starts at $100 per month with a choice of 5x or 20x more usage than Pro, per Claude's pricing page. That puts both vendors at the same $100 entry point, with OpenAI alone publishing a $500 rung.
The difference is how headroom is sold. Anthropic sells Max as a fixed multiple of Pro usage, so the allowance is predictable and speed is part of the package. OpenAI sells Pro as three fixed tiers plus pay-as-you-go credits for a specific feature list, which is more granular but leaves the fastest mode reachable only at the top tier. If your work is mostly Claude Code and you want one flat number, Max is the simpler buy. If your work sits inside Codex and ChatGPT Work, the tier plus credit model gives you a smaller first step.
Which tier should you buy?
Buy Pro 100 if you hit Plus limits a few times a month and want the Pro model set without paying for headroom you will not use. It is the cheapest way into the Pro line at $100 per month.
Buy Pro 200 if Codex or ChatGPT Work is your main tool and a Pro 100 allowance would not survive a normal week. Budget for the lower allowance on a new subscription, and if you are grandfathered, put October 29, 2026 in your calendar now.
Buy Pro 500 only if generation speed is your real constraint rather than token volume. Ultrafast is the one thing in the Pro line you cannot buy your way into from a cheaper tier or from credits.
Stay on Plus if your ChatGPT use is writing, research and the occasional Codex run. At $20 per month it covers the same model family for lighter workloads, and the step to Pro 100 is five times the price.

FAQ
How much does ChatGPT Pro cost?
ChatGPT Pro has three monthly tiers: Pro 100 at $100, Pro 200 at $200 and Pro 500 at $500. Pro is billed monthly only, since OpenAI does not offer annual billing or prepayment for Pro.
Is ChatGPT Pro 500 worth it over Pro 200?
Only if you need Astra Ultrafast or the largest included usage. Ultrafast is available only on Pro 500, and at launch buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 does not unlock it, so $500 per month is the only path to the fast mode.
Do existing Pro 200 subscribers keep their old usage allowance?
Grandfathered subscribers keep their previous included usage allowance through October 29, 2026. After that date the lower allowance applies and the subscription price stays at $200 per month.
